Mike Olsen, CFO, AHACPA

Mr. Olsen brings twenty-three years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax planning and educational program development and delivery. Mr. Olsen has a Masters of Business Administration and is a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Olsen also has nine years of specialized experience in the housing industry with a specific emphasis on the audit, financial reporting and submission requirements specifically required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for multifamily, HUD-approved Lending and public housing areas. Prior to joining AHACPA, Mr. Olsen was employed by the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young for approximately 2 years and most recently has been self employed with his own accounting and tax practice for the past 10 years. Prior to that he spent five years as Chief Financial Officer and Accounting Manager for Skaggs Management Company.

Les Sparks, President, AHACPA

Les is the President of the Affordable Housing Association of Certified Public Accountants. Prior to this, Les was involved in various capacities in the software manufacturing for governmental "Case Management" systems for governmental agencies. He was the Chief Financial Officer for Professional Staff Management, a large employment services firm. Les began his career with the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young. He spent over 13 years at E&Y providing accounting, auditing and consulting services to variety of clients in many industries. Les is an accomplished trainer in both software and accounting issues.

As president of AHACPA, Les provides support to the more than 600 members of the association. This support includes the interpretation of accounting and auditing and financial statement requirements. Such support is provided either by phone, email or other means and is designed to assist the members in correctly reporting financial information to HUD’s Real Estate Assessment Center.

Les is responsible for the development of and presentation of training programs which provide continuing professional education (CPE) to the auditors and other users of the relevant REAC systems. Les also supervises the preparation of over 700 annual financial statement submissions under multifamily, public housing and FHA lender requirements.

 

Other Course Information
OBJECTIVE: To learn HUD accounting, audit, and electronic submission requirements and how to efficiently implement those requirements.  

PREREQUISITES/ADVANCED PREPARATION: General HUD accounting or audit experience.  You do not need to print any course materials prior to your arrival.  All materials will be provided for you.  

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: Group-Live with interactive discussion, guides and practice aids, case studies.

LENGTH/CPA CREDITS: 3 hours governmental auditing and 13 hours governmental accounting for a total of 16 hours CPE credit.  

CANCELLATION POLICY: All cancellation requests must be received in writing (email or fax is fine).  Registration fees are fully refundable provided the request is received at least three weeks prior to the course. Requests received after this date, but one week before the course will receive a refund less an administration fee ($75 for 2 day course, $50 for 1 day course).  Due to financial obligations incurred by AHACPA no refunds will be issued on cancellation requests received less than a week before the course.  

SUBSTITUTIONS: If you are unable to attend a course you may substitute another individual or change locations without penalty.  The location change must be within the same calendar year.  For proper CPE credit and record keeping, you must notify us in advance of any substitution or change in location.
